CASE STUDY : TWO PLAYER GAME

Available for purchase on my Etsy store.

ABSTRACT

When my two children hit the ages of 10 and 12, they began competing in nearly every way. More than once a week, they’d ask “who is the most responsible child?” During this time, I felt like I was reminding my kids to do their routine chores instead of them taking the initiative. To play into their competitive nature, I created a chore chart called Two Player Game.

CHALLENGE

My kids were accustomed to being reminded to complete their daily and weekly chores. They, like most kids their age, lacked the ambition to do it themselves. They were largely motivated by the opportunity to play video games, something that was capped at two hours a day on weekends.

SOLUTION

I created a two-person chore chart that encouraged competition, gamifying the mundane chores of keeping their rooms clean and bathrooms tidy. It was laminated and hung on the fridge. They were given one week of continued reminding and then they were on their own.

RESULTS

  1. The 12-year-old, arguably the least responsible of the two, won the weekly competition for the first two weeks.

  2. Independent chore completion increased in the first week.

  3. Their bedroom floors were vacuumed weekly for the first time in their lives.

  4. Instant reduction in towel laundry as the towels were hung back in the bathroom vs new towels being used daily.
